APEC Youth Summit - October 2003

The APEC Youth Summit will be held in Bangkok, Thailand in October 2003. The key areas that the Youth Forum will focus on:

  • understanding the gaps that exists (generation, social, opportunity, gender) within society and the gaps that exist between countries
  • understanding economic integration and the impact on youth and children
  • youth employment
  • the role of youth as actors
  • target groups towards a better future.

All participants must

  • be resident of an APEC country
  • be between 17-25 year old
  • be an active member of a youth/ voluntary service organization
  • have the ability to speak English.
  • Some qualification or experience in training or work in social development / community service is also required as well as a knowledge on issues concerning Regionalisation and Globalisation.

Recommendation

Youth for Peace:The workshop was attended by over 20 participants from 10 different countries namely Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. This workshop was organized to enable representatives of youth organizations who are engaged in peace work to come to share their experiences, understanding of peace and to facilitate the drafting of possible strategies that can be utilized by participants upon return home. Practical strategies that took into consideration the concept of peace in the context of multi-ethnic, multi-cultural Asia were delineated and are as follows:

Short Term Strategies

  • Participant address list to be prepared and circulated in order to facilitate bilateral and multilateral communication and foster the exchange of experiences.
  • Development of online networks such as e-groups.
  • The design of electronic newsletter designed to enhance knowledge exchange, advise of current programs and ever changing youth situations.

Long Term Strategies

  • Calendar of important events in the region to be circulated in order to ensure wide participation.
  • Development of resource lists outlining funding sources, networks, and training programs available for youth.
  • The organization of training workshops for capacity building of youth organizations.
